What Is GNM Nursing?


GNM is an abbreviation for “General Nursing and Midwifery”. What does that mean? This field focuses on the education of potential nurses in general healthcare, nursing, and midwifery. It is meant for nursing students to develop their knowledge of nursing and healthcare so they can branch out at into field at some point.

GNM refer to coursework for nursing students at many universities as well. Once students have advanced their education, they can go into more specific fields of healthcare. These fields include but are not limited to intensive care, dermatology, gynecology, anesthesia, emergency care, pediatrics, and many more areas of healthcare.



They can work in the public or private sector. These nurses can also work different healthcare facilities such as hospitals, emergency care facilities, nursing homes, and clinics. GNMs can also be seen working in the military, community centers, grade schools, colleges, and universities.

Many GNMs also continue their coursework beyond just a bachelor’s degree. They go on to graduate school to advance their skills. This opens up doors to other opportunities in healthcare field such as leadership and management occupations.


What Is Midwifery?

Midwifery is a health profession and science that deals female pregnancy, female healthcare, childbirth, and postpartum period of childbirth. This is a very engaging profession because it has the nurse build a relationship with his or her pregnant patient. These nurses are called certified nurse midwife.

The reason these nurses need to build relationships with their patients is because these pregnant women are trusting you with the health of their newborn. These nurses are experts on how the female body and mind work. Hence they know why building these nurse-patient relationships are so important.



They deal with the patient through the whole process of pregnancy. From first trimester through the postpartum phase. The midwife nurse is meant to assist the patient throughout the entire way.

Midwife nursing is a profession that requires a very specialized education and training program. They must become registered nurses first and then complete very specific and aimed toward female healthcare. Then pass there board exam to become a certified midwife nurse.
